Bharatanatyam Mudras and meaning

Asamyukta Hasta or Single Hand Gesture

Asamyukta hastas are done using single hand.

Following are the list of all the Single hand Gesture:
1. Pataki
2. Tripataaka
3. Ardhapataaka
4. Kartarimukha
5. Mayura
6. Ardhachandra
7. Araala
8. Shukatunda
9. Mushthi
10. Shikhara

1. Pataki
Pataki means “Flag”. Pataki is done with all fingers held straight like the Stop sign. There should be no gap between the fingers.
2. Tripataaka
Tripataaka means “three parts of the flag”. In this Mudra, all the fingers are held straight and close together like the stop sign except for the ring finger which is bent.

3. Ardhapataaka
Ardhapataaka means “Half Flag”. It is done by bending the little finger after doing the Tripataaka.
4. Kartarimukha
Kartarimukha Mudra is done when the little finger and the ring finger is bent and pressed against the thumb. While the index finger and the Middle finger is stretched to show a scissor.
5. Mayura
The ring finger and the tip of the thumb touch each other while the other fingers are held straight without any gap.
6. Ardhachandra
In Ardhachandra all the finger is held straight and together, except the thumb finger which is held apart. It is just like the Pataka gesture, but the thumb finger is held straight and not bent like in Pataka.
7. Araala
It is done when the Index finger is bent while doing the Pataka Mudra. Here the index finger is bent along with the thumb, while the other fingers are held straight.
8. Shukatunda
When the Ring finger of the Araala mudra is bent we get Shukatunda Hasta.
9. Mushthi
In simple words it is a closed fist position of the palm. When the four fingers are pressed closely against the palm, while, the thumb is held tightly between the palm and the other four fingers. The thumb can also be placed on the four fingers
10. Shikhara
Here all the fingers are bent and pressed against the Palm except the thumb. The thumb is raised and held erect. (Like the thumbs-up Sign)

Traditional Dances of Tamil Nadu

1. Bharatanatyam:

Method of Dance:
Bharatha Natyam is form of dance has been carried by 'nattuvanars' and devadasis, in the temples of south India. This is directly derived from the devotional dances performed in the temples of South India from the tenth century to the middle of this century.
2. Kolattam:
 Kolattam is an ancient village art. 

Origin: 
Tamil Nadu
Method of Dance:
Bharatha Natyam is form of dance has been carried by 'nattuvanars' and devadasis, in the temples of south India. This is directly derived from the devotional dances performed in the temples of South India from the tenth century to the middle of this century.

3. Oylattam:
Oyil means beauty. This dance is hence the dance of beauty.


Origin:

This dance is prevalent in the south districts and Kongu Nadu in particular
Method of Dance:
First a few people will stand in a row and start dancing with rhythmic steps with musical accompaniment. Intricate steps are used in martial arts, such as Silambattam. Then gradually the row will become longer as the new comers and guests all join and dance along as they like. The dancers wear ankle-bells.

4. Peacock Dance (Mayil Attam):
This is an artistic and religious form of dance performed in the Hindu temples of Tamil Nadu and Kerala


Origin:

Tamil Nadu and Kerala
Method of Dance:
This is done by girls dressed as peacocks, resplendent with peacock feathers and a glittering headdress complete with a beak. This beak can be opened and closed with the help of a thread tied to it, and manipulated from within dress. 


5.      Karagattam


Karagam is a dance performed in praise of the rain goddess Mari Amman and river goddess Gangai Amman. 



Origin:

Most expert artistes are from Thanjavur, Pudukottai, Ramanathapuram, Madurai, Tirunelveli, and Pattukottai and Salem regions.

Method of Dance:

Karagam dance feature is how a dancer balancing a pot of on head and dancing with more intricate steps and body/arm movements decides the skill of performer. Today, the pots have transformed from mud pots to bronze ware and even stainless steel to have more decency in looking and better handling. The pots are decorated in many ways with the help of attractive flower arrangements, topped by a moving paper parrot. The parrot rotates as the dancer takes swings along these looks beautiful.

Salangai Pooja in Bharatanatyam

Bharatha Natyam: This is the Classical Form of Indian Dance originated in Tamil Nadu. Bharatanatyam is the combination of “Bharatha” and “Natyam”. Bharatha refers to an Indian sage Bharatha Muni; author of the Natyashastra. Natyam refers to the dance, drama and music.
 It has three main aspects: 
 1. “Nritta” or the purely rhythmic: This is confined to footwork and movements of the body and the hands; with no symbolic meaning.
2. “Natya” or mime: It is conveyed through gestures and facial expressions; we can call it “the suggestive language of imagination”.
 3. “Nritya”: This employs both dance and drama to emphasize the meaning of lyrics and mood in the music.
Salangai Pooja: 


                   

                                







In Tamil, Salangai means the dancer’s ankle bells (ghungroo) and puja means prayers to God. Traditionally, the student is not supposed to wear the ankle bells until this ceremony is performed. These days, the Salangai Puja is often performed several years after a student begins to learn dance.
